The vessel "Canada" was built by Brown & Bell, New York shipbuilders, in 1823, for Black Ball Lines as a packet from New York to England. In 1833, she became part of the Red Swallowtail Lines, New York to London. In 1835, "Connecticut parties" purchases her. From 1839 to 1842, she in engaged in the "transient trades" to various ports.
